Looking at the past always creates a tension between myth and
reality. The history of Brussels is a very nice example of this.
Walking through the historical town centre we’ll see what kinds of
stories were invented about the city’s origin. Brussels can also be
proud (?) to have Paul de Saint-Hilaire, a famous pseudo-historical
author who wrote about the occult significance of some old buildings.
A critical visit to the Grand’ Place will illustrate how serious those
theories are to be taken.
This walk is more a walking lecture than a traditional guided
visit.
Roel Jacobs is known for his demystifying lectures and writings about history. He wrote critical books about the history of Brussels and Bruges.
The walk is scheduled on Friday night (October 14th)
